When they got to school the next day, Bronya filled Markaza in on what happened the day before and remarked how much it sucked that it was her last day.

Markaza’s eyes got wide and round, and then she started laughing so hard, tears rolled down her face and dripped off her chin. Between gasps, she said, “What I would give to have seen that! Dainty Cecilia beating the shit out of that vapid, hateful, bitch Stephanie! You should have sold ringside tickets. And I can only imagine Mr. Larson’s face when he saw that book!”

Her mirth was contagious, and after just a few moments, both girls were laughing so hard they were shaking and doubled over.

Cecilia chose that moment to appear. “What’s so funny?”

“Bronya just filled me in on your little adventure yesterday.”

“Oh, yeah, that. It was pretty awesome.”

The girls all shared a giggle and walked toward class.

Stephanie was waiting in the hall just outside the door. She had a large, purple bruise surrounding an eye that was almost swollen shut, a cut and stitches on her bottom lip, and a piece of tape on her nose.

Cecilia burst into tears when they approached and ran toward Stephanie. They spoke for a few minutes, with Stephanie shooting angry looks at the other two girls, before she sneered, raised her chin, and walked away.

Bronya and Markaza made their way over to speak with the still crying Cecilia.

“You okay?” Markaza asked.

“No. I’m not. I’ve ruined her chances at winning the most important pageant of her life, and I hurt her badly.” It came out between sobs.

“So? She deserved it!” Bronya hissed.

Cecilia shook her head. “Nobody deserves that. She’s a human being with feelings, too. I could’ve just walked away. I lost my temper, and I can never take back what I did to her.”

Markaza and Bronya shifted their feet around and looked down. Cecilia is right on target. They’d been doing the very thing they despised Stephanie for: judging.

“We’re sorry. We didn’t mean to laugh. You’re right. What did Stephanie say?” Bronya’s heart ached, and she wanted nothing more than to hit rewind and not stare in the first place.

“She said she didn’t tell anyone who beat her up, but if I continue to talk to either of you, she will, and I’ll be ex-ex-expelled.” Cecilia’s shoulders shook, and she had both arms wrapped around her middle.

“Okay. Calm down. We’ll leave you alone. You have plenty of friends that you can hang around with. Lots of people like you.” It was the best Bronya could do, and the hate she had inside her grew tenfold. Her chance was gone.

They parted ways, and she was very careful not to look at Cecilia any more that day.

After school, Bronya got the usual ride home from Markaza. As they pulled into the driveway, she reached into her bag and presented a small, plastic bag with a knotted-leather necklace inside. When Bronya put her hand around it, she felt something stir in the pit of her stomach. It was like her life force was being pulled to the bag in her hands.
